The KISMET Foundation Artist-In-Residence Program Application

The KISMET Foundation's Artist-In-Residence program supports and enhances the work of writers, artists and musicians by providing uninterrupted time for work, reflection and collegial interaction in a setting of natural beauty.

Residents stay in our three-bedroom Artist Cottage on an estate overlooking Casco Bay, and have access to a small seasonal studio.

The Artists Cottage was a refuge of calm and quiet during a particularly weighty winter of my life. The timing could not have been better, my hosts any kinder, and the location was a dream. Steps from the bay, perched on a small hill, the house offered room after room of inspiration with its original paintings and open views of light on the water, freezing rain against the windows, the sudden surprise of snow, and on clear nights, so many stars. I spent hours walking the long length of the island, watching seabirds and tides on the ferry dock, reading poetry, and writing, which is what I came here to do.

Statement of Purpose

Art helps build community, and it is part of the KISMET Foundation's mission to nurture this guiding principle. While the primary goal of the Artist Residency is to provide the gift of time and space for visual artists, writers, musicians and others to explore and create, we also look to this time as a gift to the community: an opportunity to forge relations and build bridges by embedding our artist residents in the local community.  We wish to demonstrate that art is a fundamental part of a life lived more fully; and that art is an equally vital component of Maine’s culture and economic well-being.

Each Artist-In-Residence will share their work, vision, and experiences through demonstrations and/or informal discussions with the public at agreed-upon times during the residency. Discussions with each artist prior to his/her arrival allow us to discover the best ways to explore these connection opportunities for effective engagement with local institutions; for instance, our local library, history center, schools, art centers, and other community groups.

Recognizing that artists as individuals express themselves in a variety of ways, we look to engage our prospective Artists-In-Residence in a collaborative and fun approach to their time here, tailoring each residency to the interests of the artist and the community.

This residency challenges you to really dig deep in the community.
— George Mason, past Artist-in-Residence

Residency Program Details

Artists—emerging and established—who paint, draw, use pastel, ink and other graphic mediums; photographers; low-impact printmakers (sorry, no press on premises); writers and musicians are all welcome and encouraged to apply.

The key requirement for the month-long residency is that applicants embed themselves into the local community, hosting public open studios, workshops and demonstrations, and exhibitions of their art.

Acceptance to the KISMET Residency will be based on review by a selection committee.

Application deadline: Applications will be accepted beginning in May 2024. We have a deadline of September 30 for each residency season.
